Making the Move to the Sun City: Why El Paso Should Be Your Next Home
The city of El Paso, Texas resides in the westernmost tip of the Lone Star State. Although we’re the sixth-largest city (population-wise) in Texas, we’re so far removed from the other “big” cities that El Paso often feels like its very own. This makes El Paso a very unique city. We’re large enough to not be considered “small town” but we’re not too big so as to make things difficult.
All too often, people move to large cities with hope and aspirations only to be rudely reminded that the big city life isn’t really in the cards. El Paso, however, has excellent opportunities while boasting a great housing market. In fact, you can purchase a beautiful Winton Homes home in El Paso for a price that would barely cut it in a bigger city. If you’re considering moving to the Sun City, then keep reading to learn more about what makes us unique!
One of the Safest Cities in the Nation
Safety is always a priority, whether you’re a single individual or have a family. You might’ve already heard this but El Paso, Texas continuously ranks among the top safest cities in the nation. In fact, in 2019, El Paso ranked as the sixth safest city according to Safewise. This distinction is derived from a variety of details. For instance, the safest cities have a “violent crime rate 1.19 times lower than the national average.” To put this into perspective, there are about 3.7 violent crimes per every 100 people. Further, violent and property crime rates have dropped in El Paso since 2018. Simply put, El Paso’s safety means this city is a great place for families to start!
A True Goldilocks City
Everyone knows the story of Goldilocks and the three bears. The term “goldilocks” is often used to describe something that’s “just right.” Earth, for example, is in the goldilocks zone in our solar system. It’s not too hot or too cold, it’s just right for life to thrive. That’s why there’s no life on Mars (despite what David Bowie may have hoped).
This description can be used for cities, as well. El Paso is in the perfect goldilocks zone. It’s big enough to not feel like a small desert town where nothing ever happens but it’s big enough to be on the map. People know of El Paso. We’re also in a great location so you can easily drive to Santa Fe or Albuquerque, New Mexico, or to bigger cities in Texas such as Austin or San Antonio. The option is there but you won’t have to worry about the higher cost of living that comes from the bigger Texas cities.
Countless Fun Things to Do
If you’re still unsure about moving to El Paso, then let us list the ways the Sun City stands out as one of the best cities for fun and entertainment. If you’re into music, then you’re in luck! Many bands take the freeway from Austin or Dallas and stop in El Paso to play a show before continuing on to Phoenix, Tucson, or California. Sometimes, however, bands instead play in Santa Fe or Albuquerque. Instead of suffering from FOMO (fear of missing out), you can simply take a day trip up north to New Mexico to see your favorite bands.
El Paso also has the world’s largest classic film festival. The Plaza Classic Film Festival runs for a little over a week near the end of July and start of August. This event tends to draw in major crowds. Every year, different industry professionals and even some major stars pay a visit to the Plaza Classic Film Festival for a talk before the screening. In the past few years, well-known actors such as Sam Eliot, Richard Dreyfuss, Bruce Dern, and Louise Fletcher have graced the Plaza Film Festival Stage.
If film or music isn’t your cup of tea, then El Paso also has other great options for you to partake in. There are countless farmers markets that take place during the weekend all across town, and in Las Cruces (only a short 40-minute drive away). There are many beautiful parks and hiking trails where you can commune with nature, as well.
